2003 toyota sequoia review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. American size, toyota quality. introductiontoyota sequoia is among the best of the full-size suvs. It's about the same size as a ford expedition, and slightly larger than a chevy tahoe. It's quiet and comfortable. the sequoia is a great family vehicle, a modern replacement for the traditional american station wagon, with three rows of seats capable of carrying eight passengers. new options for 2003 include a dvd entertainment system for rear-seat rugrats. The package comprises a high-resolution screen that flips down from the headliner, a dvd player in the center console, wireless headphones, and an independent rear-seat audio system. Another new option for 2003 is hydraulic load leveling. Brake assist has been added as standard equipment for 2003. . lineuptoyota sequoia comes in two trim levels: sr5 and limited. Both are built in the same assembly plant at princeton, indiana. sequoia's front and rear doors are nicely integrated and fit proportionally with the rearmost seating and cargo area. The liftgate rear window actually rolls down, just like on those wood-paneled station wagons of the '60s and '70s. the limited model is distinguished by its fog lights, running boards, attractive alloy wheels, and rear spoiler. The overall look is clean, purposeful and, above all, big. . interiorthe limited model is fitted with sumptuous leather seats, comfortable and heated. getting in and out of the sequoia is a challenge, however. We say 'kids' because they're the only ones with the agility to hop over the middle-row to get to the third-row seats. We found that left enough room for a jogging stroller, a baby backpack, and all the rest of the gear we needed for a day's worth of hiking. Then there's enough space back there to clean out toys 'r us during a clearance sale. toyota's attention to detail can be seen everywhere in the sequoia. The terrifically large bin between the front seats is split into two levels. The top level has a notepad holder and a place for coins. The bottom level has a molded, bookshelf-like cd holder to keep up to eight cds from rattling around. There's enough room left over to hold a six-pack or a moderately sized purse. An overhead console holds sunglasses. The driver information center includes a compass, outside temperature, and fuel economy statistics, such as miles until empty, and overall and instant mpg. Double sun visors are provided. And not all of us are enamored with the metal-tone trim in the limited model. . driving impressionpiloting the toyota sequoia on the open road is a pleasure. We love the smooth and powerful v8 engine. It's a marvel of a power plant, and this truck needs all of its 240 horsepower. The transmission, too, was seamless in operation. Wind noise at highway speed wasn't obtrusive, but the cabin wasn't as hushed as a lexus ls 430 sedan we recently drove. the brakes work well, and come with brake assist. The first is a simple button, located fairly low in the center of the dashboard. Pressing it will put the vehicle in 4 hi, good for driving on snowy or slippery roads. It can be engaged on the fly without having to stop the vehicle. Instead of modulating the throttle, we simply held the gas down, and the sequoia walked right up the hill, transferring torque to the tires with the best grip. Drop it into 4 lo, and the system automatically locks the center differential for go-anywhere capability. Yet another new option for 2003 is a seven-pin towing connector that is compatible with electric trailer brakes. sequoia's luxury and comfort come with a price at the gas pump. The epa says to expect only 14 mpg in city driving and a paltry 17 mpg on the highway. Forgoing 4wd ups the highway figure to 18 mpg. Parallel parking this hulk in downtown austin, texas, proved to be a humbling experience. . summarytoyota sequoia has seating for up to eight (or five and lots of room to bring the dogs). Sequoia's interior is designed with generous seats, big armrests, and lots of storage for passengers, with an optional entertainment system for long trips. Toyota's star system, a comprehensive combination of electronic safety, stability and traction controls, is standard on all models, as are eight airbags. The standard 4. 6-liter v8 is rated at 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque and an epa-estimated 14/20 mpg city/highway. Sequoia limited and platinum models come with a 5. 7-liter v8 rated at 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque and an epa-estimated 13/18 mpg city/highway. Both come with a 6-speed automatic. A flex-fuel version of the 5. 7-liter engine is available for burning inefficient e85 (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline), dropping fuel economy to a dismal 9/13 mpg city/highway with e85 or 13/17 mpg with gasoline. We recommend the 4. 6-liter. The base engine got a boost in both power and efficiency for 2010. Changes since then have been confined to options and trim levels. It's every inch a full-size suv. The sequoia shares design features with the tundra pickup from the front bumper to the b-pillar, along with numerous drive train components. the low windshield angle accentuates bulk below the hood line, and large high-mounted headlamps add an alert look to a cabin-forward design. Exterior mirrors are large, because they have to be for towing, but careful smoothing has reduced wind noise, as does the use of partially hidden wipers that likewise must be very large to sweep the windshield. All the roof pillars are big as well, and the flare in the bodywork to cover the rear tires makes the area between the wheels look smaller than it is. The rear doors open wide, for easy child seat and passenger access. Parking sensors and a pair of rear camera display choices enable easier parking and the ability to avoid people or toys lurking in the driveway. the receiver hitch is well incorporated in the rear bumper, and the bumper has decent low-slip top for loading the roof rack. Seating is designed for long days of driving, with a comfortable, broad driver's seat with power lumbar support. The seats have soft, wide bolsters, easy to climb over getting in and out, and the kind of adjustability that allows a driver to shift around during long drives. The sr5's cloth and platinum's perforated leather each offer two colors, graphite and sand beige, each as bland as they sound; to these the limited adds red rock, a still-muted but more interesting, southwest-flavored shade suggesting of bricks or red-clay ceramics. the sequoia revels in bigness. The dash is simple and focused, with two central gauges, speedometer and tachometer, flanked by fuel, temperature and voltage gauges. The steering column tilts and telescopes, and it's electrically and memory-linked on platinum. switches and dials are used to control windows and the hvac system. The hvac system is designed to define and maintain three different climate zones, two in the front, and one in the back. We think toyota does a good job when it comes to switch feel and operational consistency of dials and other touch points. two overhead compartments are suitable for sunglasses, and the control strip has sunroof controls. An electrochromic rear view mirror is standard except on sr5, and the mirror contains built-in garage door opener buttons operating on three different frequencies. On the a-pillar are hefty grab handles, with grips big enough to support body weigh.
