2007 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The all-new next-generation pickups are here. introductionthe all-new chevy silverado is here. Completely redesigned, the new silverado is built on a stiffer chassis. Also very important, the 2007 silverado features an all-new interior that can be outfitted for work or pleasure. the new silverado is designed to continue its reputation among owners as the 'strongest, most dependable and longest lasting truck on the road.' the new styling is bold yet still conservative when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota and ford. While the sheet metal is all new, the main reason the new silverado looks bolder is that it's three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear than the outgoing generation. (the older-generation trucks will continue to be sold as the 2007 silverado classic. Naturally, not all engines extended cab and crew cab models have back seats and windows in the side doors that power down. The extended cab has rear access doors that are hinged at the rear but that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. the standard cab can be outfitted with a standard (6-foot, 6-inch) or long (8-foot) beds. Options include driver and front-seat side-impact air bags, side-curtain airbags, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrack active transfer case, ultrasonic rear parking assist, onstar. option prices vary by trim level and body style. Among them: a cargo management rail system for the truck bed 175), a power sliding sunroof 795), 20-inch wheels 1,295), a power sliding rear window 200), rear-seat entertainment system 1,955), navigation system 2,250), rear-locking differential 395), stabilitrak electronic stability control 425). Accessories such as step rails and chrome exterior trim are available from chevy truck dealers. note that until production of the all-new 2007 model ramps up, dealers will continue to sell the former version as the 2007 chevrolet silverado classic. This is the previous-generation version and should not be confused with the vehicle covered in this report. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy silverado may not have the aggressive styling of the dodge ram or nissan titan or even the toyota tundra or ford f-150, but its upright design may be considered both bold and appealing to its faithful customers, and they buy hundreds of thousands of silverados each year. the new design gives the 2007 chevy silverado a taller and stronger appearance than the previous generation. Indeed, the new silverado should look stronger because it's some three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear. however, a more raked windshield (raked at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps. the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Overall, compared to the former gmt800 truck, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics. the front suspension has switched from torsion bars to coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior. the pure pickup interior is more driver oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior also features larger switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky work gloves. the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack also puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash. extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. Rear seats are split 60/40 so one side can be folded up for cargo while the other is used for seating. chevy says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. driving impressionwe've driven two versions of the all-new 2007 chevy silverado on paved and gravel roads in the desert west and north of phoenix. Later we got into the more upscale version of the lt with an extended cab and standard bed, same v8 engine and same z85 suspension. Solid compact gets more power, more features. introductionwith its expressive styling and all-around competence, the chevrolet cobalt competes effectively against the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus. That's an impressive achievement, considering how long the competition has dominated this game. the cobalt is quiet and refined for a small car. Premium features are available like heated leather seats, xm satellite radio, mp3, and onstar. the ss models offer a dynamic driving experience. Driving the ss supercharged model is an absolute hoot. Quick, responsive handling and brisk acceleration performance along with a sporty-sounding exhaust note make the supercharged coupe entertaining to drive, a sport compact that can more than hold its own in the class. new for 2007, the 2. 2-liter and 2. 4-liter ecotec engines get slightly more power. A remote vehicle starter is available on models with an automatic transmission 190). Standard equipment has been upgraded to include am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary input jack and three-spoke steering wheel. An am/fm stereo with in-dash six-cd player and mp3 playback is a new option for 2007. A new exterior color option is sport red tintcoat. Three different engines are available with suspensions tuned to match. the ls, lt, and ltz models are powered by a 148-horsepower 2. 2-liter engine and use the fe1 suspension. the ls 13,790) sedan and coupe come standard with air conditioning, cloth upholstery with height-adjustable front seats and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, automatic headlights, electric rear defogger, tilt steering column, cd player with auxiliary jack, and a driver information center. Ls models come with wind-up windows and manually operated mirrors, front disc/rear drum brakes, and 15-inch wheels and tires. Ls models have a body-color grille and door handles. The ltz sedan 18,790) is a premium model that comes standard with the automatic transmission, along with upgraded audio and premium trim. ss 18,210) coupe and sedan get a 173-hp 2. 4-liter engine, the fe3 sports suspension, 17-inch wheels and high performance tires. Ss also gets upgraded cloth, special body-color trim and other upgrades. The sport package 595) includes a brushed metal trim package for the dashboard, white-faced gauges, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels with pirelli tires. safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. All but ls come standard with anti-lock brakes (abs). Head curtain side air bags 395) designed to provide head protection are optional. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, it looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks. body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around the compound complex headlamps. the coupe bears a resemblance to the cavalier it replaced, though it shares nothing else with it. The sedan features a more modern roofline sweep. The ss coupe and sedan models have a small rear spoiler, while the ss supercharged coupe carries a huge, tall rear spoiler than says it's a serious sport compact. cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class. interiorthe design theme inside the cobalt is simple and straightforward. Materials are decent and the fit and finish is good and comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout. cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the leather-trimmed seats in the ss supercharged. the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd and xm satellite radio delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall. the heating, ventilation and defroster system worked quickly and intuitively. the ls comes with manually operated windows. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheels on ltz and ss models are much nicer. the sedan trunk is wide and deep with a low lift-over height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class, though the opening to the trunk seems relatively small. Cobalt does not use space-eating gooseneck hinges on its decklid, opting instead for simple outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts. The coupe has a small trunk opening, making it difficult to fit a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive, especially the ss models. It's quiet for a car that retails for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. The brakes seemed a little mushy on the ls, which comes with rear drum brakes. the 2. 2-liter engine, which is rated at 148 horsepower, was a bit of a disappointment. It was smooth, but never felt truly powerful until it was revving very high. We like the way it sounded when it revved and, paired with the manual gearbox, it offered responsive performance. summarythe chevrolet cobalt will satisfy the needs of drivers looking for economy of price, economy of operation, and a nice, quiet ride.
